Why I Have to Stop Drinking Michelob Ultra
I was a teetotaler until the age of 33, so I’m definitely a lightweight when it comes to drinking alcohol. Then there’s the fact that I don’t like the taste of most drinks. I do have a very short list that I indulge in, but never to the point of drunkenness (because I’m a control freak, and when you’re drunk you’re not in control).
The only beer on the list is Michelob Ultra, mostly because it tastes like beer-flavored club soda and not real beer, of which I’m not a fan.
What objection could an Animal Person have to drinking beer? Well, the buzzkill folks at Vegan Porn (no porn involved, if you’re concerned) have a Vegan Booze Directory, where they tell you which animal-derived ingredients to be on the lookout for, and they list Vegan Friendly drinks. (SPOILER ALERT: If you’re a vegan and you’re especially attached to Mondavi wines, do NOT go to the site and look at the list. You won’t be happy.) Lots of beers are Vegan Friendly, including Michelob Ultra.
So what’s the problem?
The problem is the parent company is Anheuser-Busch, which owns Sea World, and is a major sponsor of professional rodeos.
Remember the whole hit-China-where-it-hurts approach to protesting their actions? Well, Anheuser-Busch, as far as I know, isn’t publicly beating dogs, imprisoning and torturing anyone for their religious beliefs, or taking over entire countries, but, in principle, the boycott strategy applies to them as well.
Until Anheuser-Busch drops Sea World and stops sponsoring rodeos, I’m back to drinking a certain brand of champagne (I’m not saying because I haven’t researched it yet, and it’s French, so who knows what else it’s involved in) or one of the many brands of organic, vegan wines.
