The Only Thing You Have To Do Today
As you know, the Senate unanimously approved the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, pushed by factory farms, rodeos, circuses, animal-testing laboratories, and other abusers of animals. (As much as you might like Senators Nelson, Snowe, or Kennedy for their support of animals, unanimous means unanimous.) If it becomes law, it will significantly weaken our first amendment rights.
Now that the election is over and Democrats have the House, that doesn’t necessarily mean that animals are any better off. We must observe their actions, as actions the only things that count.
FYI: There is something called the "suspension calendar" in the House, which is a list of bills that the Representatives believe have no opposition.
Guess what’s on the suspension calendar? The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (H.R. 4239).
What you need to do TODAY, is call your Representative to say that The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, H.R. 4239 (use both the full name and the number) needs to be pulled from the suspension calendar because there is indeed opposition. YOU’RE THE OPPOSITION!
If you want to know what on Earth your congresspeople are thinking, see the response from (ousted) Clay Shaw to my letter. I’m not sure that they’re reading H.R. 4239, and if they are, I’m not sure they’re thinking about its ramifications. And for the most comprehensive site dealing with all of the issues around the AETA, go to www.stopaeta.org.
After you’ve made your call, send an e-mail to your Representative (here’s a great letter one regarding H.R. 4239 that was hand-delivered from a public school teacher in California. Read it, but DON’T copy it–write your own) and then tell everyone you know to do the same. TODAY!
