Some Twisted M-f’ers Work at Butterball

Thanksgiving season is upon us, and for Animal People, it’s not exactly a time to rejoice, as over 45 million turkeys are slaughtered for one lousy day. Of "thanks," no less.

Let me get this straight: We give thanks for our many blessings over a headless carcass? Oh, and while she was alive she was pumped with antibiotics and steroids and led a horrifying and unnatural existence in a large shed (and most likely in a small cage within the large shed) with tens of thousands of her closest friends. Where’s the joyful, celebratory part?

Ah, but I digress even before I begin.

I’ve been getting calls on my cell phone from numbers I don’t recognize. When that happens, I don’t answer. And they don’t leave messages. And that pisses me off. So last night I answered, and it was someone from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asking for a contribution for their legal fees against Butterball. I knew about the case, and gladly made a donation.

For those who are unaware, workers at Butterball’s slaughterhouse in Ozark, Arkansas were documented:

  • punching and stomping on live turkeys
  • sexually assaulting them (yes, you read correctly)
  • slamming them against walls
  • stomping on their heads until their skulls exploded
  • swinging them against handrails until their spines popped out

One genius employee even noted that if you stomp on their stomachs just right, their insides pop out their rectums.

Maybe someone should try that on him.

There’s a video, and info on Joan Jett’s involvement (!), on this page.

Thanksgiving should be a day of compassion and conscience. It should be a day when we pledge to be kind and caring, and grateful for our many blessings. How, exactly, does one do that with a dead animal lying in the middle of the table?

Would you be equally grateful if it were a dog or cat?

Let’s start new Thanksgiving traditions that don’t involve cruelty, drugs, and slaughter.
