Most Beautiful Website Award
It’s not often that I’m bowled over by the beauty of a website, and it’s less often that the website has anything to do with animals. But when I visited Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary, I was stunned. Go there now, and let me know what you think.
I’m always on the lookout for direct service organizations (yes, they might do advocacy work, but the bulk of their work is serving animals in their care) that have a mission and values that are aligned with mine. A couple of weeks ago, Gary Francione suggested I check them out. They are vegans, they promote veganism, and they rescue farmed animals and give them "a second chance at life." The stories of the residents are beautifully-written and the photos are magnificent.
As you all know, animal websites are often filled with heart-breaking photos of brutality and suffering. Peaceful Prairie does not feature gratuitous gory photos, although it does provide powerful images of the reality of what each type of farm animal usually experiences.
Perhaps my favorite thing about Peaceful Prairie is that they aren’t Singer-heads. Their philosophy is more alighed with Regan and Francione, which is refreshing. They aren’t utilitarians, and they don’t campaign for larger cages or fewer mutilations. They help animals directly, and they provide logical, rational, ethical reasons to stop eating them.
Check out their blog, again, with gorgeous photos, don’t miss the opportunity to buy an "I am Sherman" T-shirt, and go to the "Sponsor an Animal" page to see the cost of serving each animal per year. You can donate online, and get a photo and bio of the animal you sponsor. I LOVE that idea. I work with a lot of nonprofits, and there’s nothing more powerful than getting to know the individual(s) you’re helping.
Have a peaceful day.
