“Amendment 3, What’s That?” Says the Mayor
I’m at a Friend Raiser for Turtle Nest Village (and I probably should disclose I serve as the Treasurer of the Board) on Saturday evening, with my hair all afrizz (it was on the beach and the humidity was close to 100%, at least around my head), and I’m flitting about, thanking people for coming and wondering why I’m the only one with unruly hair (my husband says the guests all belong to a private club on Palm Beach that has double-secret, proprietary hair products).
Some of the conversation buzzes about Mark Foley (R), who as the entire planet now knows sent inappropriate e-mails to young, male pages, and has resigned. Such a shame, too. He seemed like such a nice guy.
I mention this because I thought it was a bit unfortunate and gossipy, so I decided to turn a couple of the conversations to productive political topics, like, say, Amendment 3. And to my utter shock, I discovered that not one person, except Mayor Lois Frankel, had ever even heard of Amendment 3.
Mary: Mayor Frankel, on behalf of Turtle Nest Village, thanks so much for your support.
Mayor Frankel: Oh, it’s my pleasure, it’s such a great cause, yada, yada, yada.
Mary: So where do you stand on Amendment 3?
Mayor Frankel (taken aback by my sniper-like precision in question-asking): You know, I saw something about it on the side of the road about it.
Mary: What did it say? Was it for or against?
Mayor Frankel: It didn’t say anything! And I was like, Amendment 3, what’s that?
Mary: It would raise the percentage of votes necessary to pass all future amendments from a simple majority of 51% to a supermajority of 60%.
Mayor Frankel: Really? That’s bullshit.
So I guess we know where she stands.
Where do you stand? There’s a neat site called Congress.org that IS NOT SPONSORED BY THE GOVERNMENT. But I like it because it’s a lot friendlier than the senate and house sites, and it’s educational and has lots of cool resources. It even has message board and readable guides to how congress works (I’m just a bill, yes I’m only a bill, and I’m sittin’ here on Capitol Hill . . .).
You must register to vote within 30 days of the election (so your deadline is this week). And if you want to know about the issues that involve animals, go to the Humane Society Legislative Fund. And no matter who you are, revisit this post.
