The Animal Person Minute: On Nuisance Wildlife

Starsky

Our photo today is of Starsky, the muscovy duck, and no, there’s no Hutch. I’m not even sure why he’s Starsky. The other 20 or so muscovies I befriended at my previous home, which was on a lake, were given names like: Jumbo Guy, Big Meanie, Gray Momma, Dark Gray Momma, Messy Momma, Oreo Momma, Mr. and Mrs. Sprinkle, and my favorite, Mr. Magoo, who’s nearly completely blind. I gave them sort of obvious names so that my husband and neighbors could identify them to me in a moment if I was out of town and there was a problem.

Muscovies are like the canada geese of the tropics: they’re all over the place and people want them gone. . . .

  1. Thank You for helping us at the lake. We all loved your visits and I appreciated your "duck" food. Who ever thought we liked Wonder Bread anyway… Know that I am watching over the girls down in the old hood for you. Hope you are doing well. Thanks for being our friend! Magoo

  2. I found you via Rift's (aka Static 8's) blogathon blog. Nice place you have here! Anyhow, I saw this post and HAD to comment. While traveling to Florida I have seen these awesome "guys" and they are so cool. I have taken many, many pictures of the one I became close to in a weeks time. They are amazing. It's terrible people don't want them around.
