How to Boycott China or . . . Anything Else
Everyone’s writing me, understandably upset about China’s mass dog slaughter.
What can I do?
I’ll tell you, but you might not like the answer.
First, you immediately stop buying things made in China. This is an educational experience for most Americans, as they discover that so much of what they buy–particularly at big, box stores (can you say Walmart?) was made in China.
If you’re feeling particularly ambitious and you have some extra cash, go through your closet, collect everything Made in China, and give it to a charity (preferably one that isn’t going to sell it to people who can’t afford to buy much). Then, go shopping and replace the items you gave away, with items not Made in China. What you’ll find, I’m certain, is that you’ll spend more on things not made in China. Having a consumer conscience can be an expensive business, but it’s not cost-prohibitive if you buy only what you need.
A crucial step in any successful boycott is letting the boycottee know that you are boycotting them, and why, and offering them a resolution.
For instance: If you cease persecuting, imprisoning, and torturing your people for their beliefs, and end your culture of cruelty to cats and dogs, I’ll be the first person to resume my Made in China-buying habits.
Or something like that. Try to keep it factual and not emotional.
You can always write to the ambassador of the country you’re boycotting, the CEO of the company, or the Executive Director of the nonprofit (yes, there are plenty of good reasons to boycott nonprofits. See marchofcrimes.com or click here for more in-depth info on the March of Dimes and why not to support them).
Here’s the Ambassador to China’s contact info. Write to him and tell him how you feel.

If you’re going to the mall for your replacement clothing, you might want to check out your favorite stores and brands first at the Conscious Consumer section of New American Dream. The last thing you want to do is replace your clothing that was Made in China with clothing that was made by eight-year olds in Indonesia. China isn’t the only place with sweatshops or brutal government policies. And if you want to buy from the comfort of your computer, you can always count on Patagonia for fabulous, guilt-free shopping at a reasonable price.
Successful boycotting takes time, energy, and sometimes money. But it works, because it affects the bottom line. Spread the word.

For years you have been working, working hard to make your cause known and to effect positive changes in the world community. Sometimes you are successful, sometimes not. We cannot imagine how you muster the energy needed to fight on and on. And we cannot imagine the frustration you must feel at times when you are rebuffed by those guilty of harm to the inhabitants of planet earth, and to the earth itself.
In 2008, China will host the summer Olympics in Beijing. To us, this is a blatant insult to everything you stand for and to everything you have worked so long and hard to achieve. We say: Enough Already! and this is the theme of our new website for which we need your support. You can see the website at http://www.enoughalready.org. Please understand that this is not a commercial entity so we have no money to make this any more than "no-frills". It is still under construction.
Our concept is simple: China has been and continues to be the biggest offender in a large number of areas that negatively affect the world and its population. There are literally hundreds of organizations dedicated to fighting the kinds of malfeasance which China perpetrates. Individually, each can make regular, but limited progress in changing attitudes and policies of the earth's most populous nation.
United, in a concerted, carefully organized, and properly planned worldwide action, all of these groups can bring a drastic change to China's attitude and actions now and in the future. These hundreds of groups with their millions of members and supporters around the world can together stop what all have been fighting against for so many years. Whatever differences or disagreements you may have with other groups joining this movement, this is the time to put them aside in a show of strength and unity to affect the changes so necessary for the welfare of the planet.
Our plan is to boycott everything from China until they completely stop all of these abhorrent practices. No exceptions, no discussions, no compromises. Our first target will be the Olympics. Sponsors of the Beijing Olympics will be boycotted. Television networks carrying the Olympics will be turned off. Olympic athletes and coaches will be asked to boycott the Beijing Olympics.
At the same time, representatives from the Chinese government and business community will be protested. Companies that produce anything in China will be boycotted. Importers who bring Chinese made products into our countries will be boycotted. Retailers who sell products from China will suffer regular and widely publicized demonstrations at their stores.
The Chinese have been getting away with these things for far too long. No one needs anything from China. They produce nothing we can't do without. With massive cooperation between all groups who have a complaint against China, we can force a change.
We would like to put a link on http://www.enoughalready.org to your website. We invite you to add your complaint against China with your link under it, as well as your "demand" which will appear on our website and in our sample letters, emails and petitions. This is absolutely free.
We do ask that you encourage your supporters/members to follow our strategy and tactics as listed on our website, culminating in a worldwide "to the streets" demonstration on sometime later this year. We also ask that you forward this email to any other organizations, groups, websites and blogs that may share any concerns with China.
There will be advertising banners and other space available for a small fee for those wishing to create a greater presence. We are also happy to accept donations of both any technical help you can offer in getting our website functional, and any spare change you might find behind the seat cushions of your couch.
Please email us with your complaint, demand and link as soon as possible. Enough Already!
Best wishes,
Elliot Klein
Director of Operations
