YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS ARE ABOUT TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY WEAKENED
The Senate has already passed the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) and now it’s in the hands of YOUR REPRESENTATIVES.
House Resolution (H.R.) 4239, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, if passed, will make it a crime punishable by imprisonment to cause any "animal enterprise" to suffer loss of profit.
Let’s deconstruct:
- Animal enterprises include manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of animals or animal products; research facilities, pet stores, breeders, zoos, rodeos and circuses.
- THEREFORE, if you were to, say, call for a boycott of a rodeo because of its cruelty, or a research lab that doesn’t use humane procedures, and that boycott results in economic damage to that company–YOU COULD BE IMPRISONED FOR TERRORISM.
- It would also be ILLEGAL TO EXPOSE CRUEL CONDITIONS at animal enterprises.
- In other words, your right to peaceful protest, and your right to the only way to get the companies where it hurts (their bottom line) is about to be TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.
- Perhaps most important, making it illegal to expose cruelty means you will lose the ability to make an informed decision about who to buy from and who to support with your hard-earned money.
I know all the capitals look really dramatic, but this is the most damaging bill to our first amendment right to free speech I’ve ever seen, and we all have to spread the word to stop it.
