Whole Foods Liberates Lobsters

As I expected, the lobster condo was deemed an inhumane way to store live lobsters for sale at Whole Foods.

Kudos, once again, to Whole Foods for doing the right thing.

I can’t let the original NYT article of 6/10/06 go until I mention one word that has haunted me since I read it.

Robert K. Pidgeon, who is the director of purchasing for an Atlanta-based distributor of live lobsters, is quoted throughout the article. He is apparently undereducated about the lives of lobsters and/or simply doesn’t believe they have a right to live without torture.

But back to that word that’s knawing at me. . .

Mr. Pidgoen says that because most people don’t cook lobsters at home, "as a result, live seafood that sits in grocery stores is often discarded."

Discarded?

Are they killed first? If so, how? If not, do they just die from suffocation?

Am I the only one who has a problem with that?
