Animal Person in the NYT–again
My latest letter, again in The New York Times, deals with the all-emcompassing question: What is the purpose of this life?
It saddens me to read letters like the one by Carl Gutman from Albuquerque, above mine on the opinion page. He says, "We need [animals] to satisfy our hunger. . . . Human treatment means what humans decide."
Clearly, Mr. Gutman has made his decision, and what he doesn’t realize, is that when you decide against compassion, it doesn’t just affect you and whatever animal you are being cruel to.
When Mr. Gutman chooses to disregard the needs of another, he brings all of us down, as we are all connected.
